The Boston Red Sox are finding themselves, as they are playing fantastically. Boston is halfway to a sweep of the Minnesota Twins. Next up for Boston is Wednesday’s contest at Minnesota: Garrett Whitlock (RHP, 4-2, 4.38 ERA, 33 SO) takes on Sonny Gray (RHP, 4-1, 2.37 ERA, 79 SO).
Boston Red Sox vs Minnesota Twins Pregame Analysis
Whitlock is in his first season as a full-time starter, and he hopes to make 20-plus starts this season. The Wednesday start appears to be an important one because he is hoping to extend the Red Sox’s winning streak. Boston’s six victories in a row is the longest current win streak in the American League while Minnesota has dropped three straight.
The Twins’ three consecutive losses make up the longest current losing streak in their division, with the Oakland Athletics owning the only longer losing streak in the American League. Sonny Gray, who pitched very well in his first season in Minnesota in 2022, appears to be on his way to another strong season. He looks to get the Twins back on the winning track. He has been one of the league’s best pitchers thus far:

Gray won his first four decisions of 2023, but the Twins do not seem to be able to help him offensively. The Twins are 7-7 when their ace starts this season, but many of the seven losses have come recently. Minnesota won five of his six starts of the season but then fell on hard times. Gray has not allowed more than three runs in a start this season, so Boston will attempt to get to the bullpen early.
Meanwhile, on the offense side for the Red Sox, Boston is doing it all without the team’s star hitting well. Even with Rafael Devers not knocking in runs, the Red Sox offense has been impressive:
Rafael Devers didn’t have a single hit the last two nights and the Red Sox scored 9 runs in G1 and 10 runs in G2.
No matter how you slice it, that’s extremely impressive.
