MLB Betting Preview: Orioles vs Yankees Series Finale

The Baltimore Orioles and NY Yankees will wrap up their 3-game series on Thursday night in the Bronx. It will be a rubber game after the Orioles completed the comeback and went on to win game 2 on Wednesday night. EJ posted a pair of winning bets for the second game of the series, and that brings his record to 2 – 1 for the season.

The Yanks are slight home favorites at -130 for the rubber game of this series between AL East Division foes, and we have a straight 9 showing on the total. Let’s review a bit of what happened on Wednesday night and reveal a couple of betting options for the series finale in the Boogie Down!

Orioles vs Yankees Wednesday Game 2 Rewind

Tyler Wells and Nestor Cortes Jr. did exactly what they were expected to do on Wednesday night, as 5 balls found the outfield stands behind them and we cashed a pair of tickets as a result.

Gleyber Torres homered twice in Game 2 of the series with the Orioles on Wednesday night, and IKF found the seats in the bottom of the fifth inning against Tyler Wells as well. Wells and Cortes had combined to allow 18 HR entering Wednesday’s game in the Boogie Down and now you can tack on five more to their ledgers. Cortes was pulled from the game after Adam Frazier rang a 3-run blast off the right field foul pole in the top of the 7th inning.

The 5 – 1 lead was reduced to a 5 – 4 advantage, but the wheels weren’t done for the Birds quite yet. Aaron Boone brought in Jimmy Cordero in relief of Cortes Jr. and he didn’t fare much better. Cordero faced 5 batters and was only able to record one out before he was yanked from the game giving way to Albert Abreu.

Abreu came in with the Yanks down 6 – 5, and Baltimore immediately extended the lead to 7 – 5 from a Mountcastle Sac Fly. The Orioles eventually sent 12 men to the plate and scored 8 times in the top of the 7th inning, and the fans had to sing God Bless America with the Yankees down 9 – 5 coming to the plate.

The Birds went on to win 9 – 6 to give them a 1 – 1 split in the series headed to Thursday’s rubber game at Yankee Stadium.

Orioles vs Yankees Game 3 Preview

The Yankees went from eyeing a series sweep to now having to win the third game of the set against the Orioles at home to win the series.

It is amazing how the momentum of game 2 makes this a dangerous game for the Yankees because the Orioles are already playing well this year, and wins like those only build a team’s confidence. At 32 – 17, the Birds would have the best record in baseball if Tampa Bay wasn’t going bonkers to start the 2023 season.

Kyle Gibson has a championship ring on his finger after winning the World Series with Philly last season, and he has gained that experience and used it well in 2023. Granted he wasn’t much of an influence in last year’s playoff run though, as he only pitched a total of 2 1/3 innings in the post-season. He did make 31 regular season starts, however, finishing with a 10 – 8 record with an ERA of just over 5.

The big problem he had a year ago was the 24 HR allowed from 31 starts with the Phillies. So far, Gibson has seen 6 balls leave the yard behind him, but he hasn’t gotten a lick of run support of late from his offense.

The Orioles were shut out in his three previous starts before his last outing against the Blue Jays in which he picked up a win while only allowing 1 ER.

Clarke Schmidt is 2 – 1 over his last 3 starts for the Yanks, but it took him 8 starts to pick up that first dub of the campaign. Schmidt lost 3 of his first 7 starts and was left with a no-decision on the four other occasions. The issue I have with Schmidt is he has no ability to go deep into a game, so the bullpen will undoubtedly be used for at least 4 innings on Thursday.

Only once this year has Schmidt made it through 6 innings of an outing, and after what we have seen these two offenses do over the last two days, we are pointing our way to the totals again.

Orioles vs Yankees Best Bet for Thursday

(Posted Record 2 – 1 ~ +$130)

The 1st 5-Inning total may have been a little stressful on Wednesday night, as we needed that bottom-of-the-fifth rally to cash that ticket on the Over 5. I have no qualms with riding that same offer tonight, as I see an even-money offer on the table from BetMGM for the Over 5 again through the halfway point of the game.

I mentioned that the Yankees should have a pretty good week ahead of them in my weekly Yanks/Mets Weekly Preview and they could use this win at home to wrap up this important series within the division against a team ahead of them in the standings.

Whether the Yanks win or not, we have two tickets to cash, so let’s improve that 2 – 1 record with a couple of more wins on the pair of totals for Thursday night in the Bronx.

Game Total Over 9 @ -110 (2U)
1st 5-Inning Total Over 5 @ +100 (2U)
