Early Value and Traps in the Eagles 2023 NFL Season

9/10 Philadelphia -4 @ New England

The Patriots will be honoring “Touchdown Tommy” at this game, provided he doesn’t come out of retirement again to play for the Las Vegas Raiders. Because this is the first week, I’ve seen different lines. If the line gets above 5, I could envision the Patriots losing but covering. Straight up (SU), I think Philly gets their first win on their trip to return to the Super Bowl.

9/14 Minnesota @ Philadelphia -5

This is the first of Philly’s four prime-time games this season (they also play the Giants on Christmas Day). Philly was 8-4 Against The Spread (ATS) last year at home. This could be a tough spot for the Vikings as a rabid Philly crowd, with a few doses of liquid courage, welcomes their returning NFC champions for the first time this year. The lock of the year might come in the second week. SU:2-0 ATS:2-0

9/25 Philadelphia -6 @ Tampa Bay

Philly looks to invade Tampa Bay which will be in rebuilding mode after its three brief years of greatness at the quarterback position. I’m not sure how well Baker Mayfield will play in Tampa Bay, but I will bet that he makes a few good commercials. SU:3-0 ATS:3-0

10/1 Washington @ Philadelphia -7

The Eagles get a chance for revenge on the team that spoiled their perfect season last year. I expect them to make the most of that chance. This could be a big game for Hurts and his receivers as the Redskins look to start two rookies in the secondary. A possible 2-leg parlay of the Eagles and the over. SU:4-0 ATS:4-0

10/8 Philadelphia -4.5 @ Los Angeles Rams

The Eagles swing out to Hollywood on a mini 2-game road trip. The Rams are a shell of their own Super Bowl team from four seasons ago. Stafford may wish he was back in Detroit again. The Philly Express keeps rolling. SU:5-0 ATS:5-0

10/15 Philadelphia +1 @ New York Jets

Philly has never lost to the Jets in the regular season. While I’m sure Aaron Rodgers will help their team out, there’s a big difference between being a better team and being able to beat the reigning NFC champs. I strongly expect the Eagles to be the favorites come game time. Either way, their unbeaten streak continues. SU:6-0 ATS:6-0

10/22 Miami @ Philadelphia -2.5

If Miami QB Tua Tagovailoa doesn’t have a concussion at this point of the season, he may after facing the NFL’s 2022 leading sack defense with 70. Incidentally, last year’s sack total was only two from tying the record of 72 held by the 1984 Chicago Bears. Perfection continues. SU:7-0 ATS:7-0

10/29 Philadelphia -4 @ Washington

I think perfection ends here. No, I don’t think the Eagles will lose outright but I can see this being a closely contested contest. A perfect spot for the placekicker Jake Elliot to earn his keep by hitting a 40+ yard field goal. Philly escapes with a win. SU:8-0 ATS:7-1

11/5 Dallas @ Philadelphia -3

As much as Eagles fans hate to admit this, over the past decade the Cowboys have had a better REGULAR season team. In their last 20 visits to Philly, Dallas is 11-9 in both SU and ATS. It’s not often you hear handicappers hope they’re wrong, but here’s an instance I hope my prediction of Dallas winning is off base. Philly heads into their bye week on a down note. SU:8-1 ATS:7-2

11/20 Philadelphia +3 @ Kansas City

If Andy Reid was still coaching the Eagles, this could almost be an automatic victory. With a record of 27-4 off of a bye, it’s easy to see why. Unfortunately for the Eagles, Reid will be on the opposing sidelines. Nick Sirianni is a good coach, but unfortunately, Reid is not only a Hall of Fame coach but simply a better one. Philly fans start to grumble loudly as the Eagles drop two straight. SU:8-2 ATS:7-3

11/26 Buffalo @ Philadelphia -1.5

A tough three-game stretch for Philly continues as the dangerous Buffalo Bills come to town. Eagle fans probably won’t appreciate this but they’ve been able to have the privilege of watching three of the great QBs of the game in the past couple of weeks: obviously Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, and now Josh Allen. The grumbles now turn into cries that this team (2023 Eagles) is the worst team to ever take the field as they are still winless in November. SU: 8-3 ATS:7-4

12/3 San Francisco @ Philadelphia -2.5

The four weeks of losing that it’s been since the Eagles have won have never seemed longer unless they’re the last four weeks before the regular season starts. The talented, but vulnerable, 49ers travel eastward to do battle with the Eagles. Because of the previous three defeats, this has the feeling of a “must-win” game and Sirani gets his troops up for it and grabs the wins. SU:9-3 ATS:8-4

12/10 Philadelphia +1 @ Dallas

Hopefully, for the Iggles, Ezekiel Elliot doesn’t re-sign with the Cowgirls. In his six home games against Philly, Zeke has averaged 95.8 yards rushing, 38 yards receiving, and four rushing TDs. The NFC East is almost an enigma wrapped in a question in a fog of mystery. Philly wins to keep their lead in the NFC East. SU:10-3 ATS:9-4

12/17 Philadelphia -2 @ Seattle

Philadelphia makes its second trip to the West Coast this season to take on the Seahawks. In a moment of genius, Sirani has Starbucks on tap on the sidelines, and the Eagles get a helluva caffeine rush. This negates the Seahawks alleged “12th Man” home-field advantage and Philly comes home for the holidays with a win. SU:11-3 ATS:10-4

12/25 New York Giants @ Philadelphia -7

The wonderfully friendly and loving denizens of Lincoln Financial Field get a chance to atone for their previous transgressions by showing Jolly Old St. Nicklaus plenty of Christmas cheer. Luckily for Santa, the Eagles are the only ones dishing out hostility on Christmas as they send the Giants home with a lump of coal and loss. SU:12-3 ATS:11-4

12/31 Arizona @ Philadelphia -10

The NFL proves that they really do love the Eagles by scheduling Philly home for every major holiday in 2023. The Eagles return the favor by sacking Kyler Murray (or whoever his replacement may be) four times en route to a huge New Year’s Eve victory. SU:13-3 ATS:12-4

01/6-7 Philadelphia -2.5 New York Giants

This game has the potential to be flexed if there is a more compelling matchup that arises. The Eagles have clinched the NFC East but the best record is still up for grabs for home-field advantage in the playoffs, forcing Sirani to start his stars. Pissed because they don’t get a week off, Philly takes out their frustrations on New York, posting a 50-spot on the G-Men. SU:14-3 ATS:13-4
